GA4 isn't a harder version of the analytics you knew — it's a different model that most people never had explained properly.

Universal Analytics counted sessions and pageviews. GA4 counts events — every interaction is an event with parameters, and the ones that matter get marked as conversions. Once that clicks, the confusing interface stops being confusing.

This hub is the practitioner's map of GA4: what it is, how to read it, and how to configure it so the numbers tie back to leads and revenue. Start with the overview below, then work the step-by-step guides. For the full measurement picture, this sits under our marketing analytics guide.

The Foundation

How to actually get value from GA4.

Most GA4 accounts collect data nobody uses. Three moves turn it into measurement that drives decisions.

01

Install it cleanly

Get GA4 on every page through a tag manager, with a data layer feeding it. A sloppy install poisons every report downstream — fix the plumbing first.

02

Define real events

Decide which actions represent outcomes — leads, bookings, sales — and build custom events for them. Then mark those as key events so they flow everywhere.

03

Read the few that matter

Ignore most of the interface. Build a short list of reports tied to money and check them on a cadence, not whenever you panic.

GA4 isn't confusing because it's complicated — it's confusing because nobody told you it's an event model. Learn that one idea and the whole interface makes sense.

Questions

GA4, answered.

What is Google Analytics 4 (GA4)?

GA4 is Google's event-based analytics platform — the free default for most websites. Instead of counting pageviews and sessions the way Universal Analytics did, it models everything as events, which lets you measure specific actions like form submits, add-to-carts and video plays across web and app.

Is GA4 hard to learn?

The interface trips people up because it moved almost everything. But the core is simple: it tracks events, you mark the important ones as conversions, and you read a handful of reports. Once you understand the event model, the rest clicks — our beginner tutorial walks the whole setup.

What are events in GA4?

Events are the unit of measurement in GA4 — every interaction is an event with parameters attached. Some are collected automatically, some are enhanced measurement, and the valuable ones are custom events you define for the actions that matter to your business.

How do I set up conversions in GA4?

Mark the events that represent real outcomes — a lead form, a purchase, a booking — as key events (conversions). Those feed your reports, your Google Ads, and any attribution model you run. The trick is marking outcomes, not clicks.

Do I still need GA4 if I use other tools?

Most teams keep GA4 as the free baseline even when they layer dashboards or attribution tools on top, because it feeds those tools and Google Ads. The goal isn't GA4 for its own sake — it's measurement that maps to money, and GA4 is usually where that starts.
