The SEOST Attribution Playbook
Marketing Attribution.
How to assign credit for a sale across every touchpoint that earned it — the models, the software, and the honest way to read B2B journeys.
Nobody buys from one touchpoint. They search, click an ad, read an email, come back direct — then convert. Attribution decides who gets the credit.
Get it wrong and you defund the channels that actually create demand because they don't win the last click. Attribution is the difference between knowing what works and guessing.
This hub covers the models, how multi-touch differs from single-touch, when you need dedicated software, and how to handle long B2B journeys. It sits under our marketing analytics guide, and pairs with conversion tracking — you can't attribute what you didn't track.
Inside Attribution
Six sides of attribution.
Attribution is a set of decisions, not one setting. Each front below has a deep-dive underneath it.
Attribution Models
First-touch, last-touch, linear, time-decay, position-based and data-driven — what each one says and when to trust it.
Explore →Multi-Touch Attribution
Spreading credit across the whole journey — why it's more honest for considered purchases and what it takes to run.
Explore →Attribution Software
When a spreadsheet stops working and dedicated tools start paying for themselves — and how to choose between them.
Explore →Attribution in GA4
How GA4's data-driven model distributes credit for free — and where its view of the journey ends.
Explore →Tracking Foundations
Attribution is only as good as the tracking underneath it. UTMs and clean events are the prerequisite, not an afterthought.
Explore →Reporting Attribution
Turning a model into a report leadership trusts — showing credit by channel without starting a turf war.

How to attribute honestly.
You will never have perfect attribution. You can have useful attribution with three moves.
Track every touch
Tag campaigns, fire clean events, and connect your CRM. A model can only distribute the credit for touchpoints it can actually see.
Pick a model and commit
Choose the model that fits your sales cycle, write down why, and leave it alone. Consistency beats the perfect model you abandon in a quarter.
Report one source of truth
Every platform overclaims. Decide which tool owns the number, and stop trying to reconcile figures that were never built to agree.

The point of attribution isn't a perfect number — it's to stop defunding the channels that create demand just because they don't win the last click.

Questions
Attribution, answered.
What is marketing attribution?
Attribution is how you assign credit for a conversion across the touchpoints that led to it — the search, the ad, the email, the direct visit. Different models split that credit differently, so the goal is choosing one that reflects how your buyers actually decide and then reporting it consistently.
What's the difference between single-touch and multi-touch attribution?
Single-touch models give all the credit to one touchpoint — usually the first or last click. Multi-touch models spread credit across every touchpoint in the journey, which is more honest for considered purchases but harder to set up and read.
Which attribution model should I use?
There's no perfect model — only one that fits your sales cycle. Short, impulse purchases survive last-click fine. Long B2B journeys need multi-touch or data-driven. The worst choice is switching models every quarter, because you lose the ability to compare.
Do I need attribution software?
Small sites can run attribution inside GA4 and a spreadsheet. Once you have multiple paid channels, a CRM and a long sales cycle, dedicated multi-touch attribution software starts earning its cost by stitching touchpoints across tools GA4 can't see.
Why do my attribution numbers never match?
Because every platform claims credit for itself — Google Ads, Meta and GA4 will each report the same conversion. That's why you pick one source of truth and one model, rather than trying to reconcile numbers that were never meant to agree.
