Technical SEO is the least glamorous discipline and the highest-leverage one — no amount of content ranks on a site Google can't crawl, render or trust.

Most "technical SEO" content is a scary list of 200 things to check. This guide is different. It's the same material we teach on stage at SEO Spring Training — the small set of fixes that actually unblock traffic, in the order that matters.

Start with the audit, clear the crawl and index blockers, get your Core Web Vitals in the green, then move up the stack. When you want to go deeper, come learn it in the room with the people doing the work.

The Foundation

How technical SEO actually works.

Every technical fix serves one of three jobs. Clear all three and the rest of your SEO finally gets a chance to work.

01

Can it be crawled?

Bots have to reach your pages — no broken links, blocked resources, redirect chains or dead ends. A clean path in is the first thing to earn.

02

Can it be indexed?

Once crawled, pages have to render and qualify for the index — correct canonicals, no accidental noindex, unique content and valid structured data.

03

Is it fast & stable?

A page that loads fast, responds quickly and doesn't jump around earns better rankings and keeps the visitors you worked to attract.

Questions

Technical SEO, answered.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the work that lets search engines crawl, render, index and trust your site — clean architecture, fast pages, correct status codes, structured data and a sitemap. It's the foundation everything else is built on.

Do I need to be a developer to do technical SEO?

No. Many technical fixes are configuration and content choices, not code — internal links, redirects, canonical tags and page speed basics. Deeper work benefits from a developer, but the audit and the priorities are learnable.

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are Google's three page-experience metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness) and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). Passing them is part of a healthy technical baseline.

How often should I run a technical audit?

Do a full audit at least twice a year and after any major change — a redesign, migration, platform switch or traffic drop. Between audits, watch Search Console for crawl, indexing and Core Web Vitals issues.

Does technical SEO still matter with AI search?

More than ever. AI answers are built from pages that were crawled, rendered and understood. Clean structure and structured data help both Google and AI models read your site — the same foundation serves both.
