The SEOST Local SEO Playbook
Local SEO.
The practitioner's guide to owning the map pack and winning your city. No theory — the local plays that actually fill the calendar.
For a business that serves a city, local SEO is the single highest-leverage channel there is — it puts you in front of buyers at the exact moment they're ready.
Most "local SEO advice" stops at "claim your Google Business Profile." This guide goes further. It's the same material we teach on stage at SEO Spring Training — modeled on what's actually ranking in the map pack right now, broken into moves you can run this week.
Start with the area that's holding you back — profile, reviews, citations or pages — work through the step-by-step guides, and when you want to go deeper, come learn it in the room with the people doing the work.
The Moving Parts
Six parts of local SEO.
Ranking locally isn't one task — it's a system. Each part below is its own deep-dive, with guides underneath.

How local ranking actually works.
Google ranks local results on three factors. Get these right and the map pack takes care of itself.
Relevance
How well your profile and pages match what the searcher wants. The right primary category, services and content tell Google you're a fit for the query.
Distance
How close you are to the searcher at the moment they search. You can't move your pin, but you can define service areas and earn relevance everywhere you work.
Prominence
How well-known and trusted you are — reviews, citations, links and a real reputation off-site. Prominence is what breaks ties when distance is equal.

Questions
Local SEO, answered.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the practice of ranking in map-pack and local search results so nearby customers find your business when they search for what you do. It centers on your Google Business Profile, local landing pages, reviews and citations.
How is local SEO different from regular SEO?
Local SEO adds a geographic layer. On top of the usual relevance and authority signals, Google weighs distance to the searcher and local prominence — your profile, reviews and consistent name, address and phone across the web.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Local work is often faster than national SEO. A well-optimized Google Business Profile and clean citations can move map-pack rankings within weeks to a few months, especially in less competitive cities.
Do I need a physical address to rank locally?
You need a presence Google can verify. Storefronts use a street address; service-area businesses can hide the address and define the areas they serve. Either way, consistent NAP and a verified profile are the foundation.
What matters most for the map pack?
Relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means a complete, correctly-categorized Google Business Profile, a steady stream of genuine reviews, consistent citations, and local landing pages that match the searcher's intent.
