Search stopped matching keywords years ago. It matches meaning — and meaning is made of entities and the links between them.

Google reads your site as a map of things and relationships, not a bag of words. So the winning move isn't stuffing a keyword — it's owning a topic: covering every subtopic, defining your entity clearly, and connecting it all so the whole cluster reads as authoritative.

Get this right and two things happen: you rank for hundreds of related queries at once, and you become the kind of clean, well-defined source AI answer engines pull from. Start with the pillars below, then work the guides.

The Foundation

How search understands meaning.

Semantic SEO comes down to three moves. Get these right and you rank for the whole topic, not one term.

01

Define the entity

Make it unmistakable who you are and what each page is about — with schema, consistent naming and clear context. Ambiguity is what keeps you out of the knowledge graph.

02

Cover the topic

Answer every reasonable question around the subject — the subtopics, the related entities, the follow-ups. Breadth and depth are how you earn topical authority.

03

Connect it all

Internal links turn a pile of pages into a map of meaning. Good linking tells search engines how your topic fits together and which page owns what.

Questions

Semantic SEO, answered.

What is semantic SEO?

Semantic SEO is optimizing for meaning instead of just keywords — building content around topics, entities and the relationships between them so search engines and AI models understand your site, not just match a string of words.

What is an entity in SEO?

An entity is a distinct, defined thing — a person, place, company, product or concept — that search engines track in their knowledge graph. Being a clear, well-connected entity is how you get understood and surfaced, especially in AI answers.

How is semantic SEO different from keyword SEO?

Keyword SEO targets individual search strings. Semantic SEO covers the whole topic — the subtopics, questions and entities around it — so you rank for hundreds of related queries and read as the authority on the subject, not a one-page answer.

What is topical authority?

Topical authority is earned by covering a subject comprehensively and connecting it well internally. When your site answers every reasonable question on a topic, search engines trust you on it — and that trust lifts every page in the cluster.

Does semantic SEO help with AI search?

It's the foundation of it. AI models answer in entities and relationships, not keywords, so a clear entity and strong topical coverage are exactly what gets you pulled into a generated answer. Semantic SEO and GEO are two sides of the same work.
