“Ranking” is the wrong word for what you are now chasing, and that mismatch is why so many good sites feel invisible in AI search. There is no blue-link ladder to climb in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity. There is an answer, and either you are cited in it or you are not. This is a practitioner’s playbook for getting cited across all three — in 2026, with the engines as they actually behave today.

What you’ll take away

  • What “ranking” really means in AI search: being the cited source, not the top position
  • How AI engines decide which pages to pull into an answer
  • Per-engine moves for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • The shared playbook that works across all of them
  • How to measure visibility when there is no rank tracker for answers

What “ranking” means in AI search

In classic search, you rank a URL and convert the position into a click. In AI search, the engine writes the answer and names a handful of sources it leaned on. Your goal shifts from “be position one” to “be one of the three-to-five sources this answer cites.” Everything below serves that single objective. If you only remember one thing: you are optimizing to be quoted, not clicked.

How AI engines pick which sources to cite

Different engines, same instinct. Each one retrieves a set of candidate pages for the question, evaluates them for clarity, relevance, authority and corroboration, and then synthesizes an answer that leans on the strongest. A page gets picked when it answers the exact question directly, is structured so the answer is easy to lift, comes from a source with real credibility, and is backed up by other sources saying the same thing. If you want the deeper mechanics, we unpack them in what generative engine optimization is.

The three-step path into any AI answer

  1. Get retrievedBe crawlable, indexed and clearly on-topic so you make the engine’s candidate shortlist in the first place.
  2. Get trustedBack the answer with authority signals and corroboration from other credible sources the engine recognizes.
  3. Get quotedState the answer cleanly and early so the engine can extract it without stitching it together.

How to rank in Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews are built on top of Google’s index, so your SEO foundations still count. The moves that move the needle:

  • Win the underlying organic relevance first. Overviews tend to draw from pages already competing well for the query. Strong traditional SEO is table stakes, not a separate track.
  • Answer the question in the first two sentences of the relevant section, in 40–60 words, so there is a clean passage to lift.
  • Use question-shaped headings that mirror how people actually ask, and put a direct answer directly beneath each.
  • Add FAQ and Article schema to remove ambiguity about what the page is.
  • Keep it current. Overviews favor fresh, maintained pages — stale content gets passed over.

How to get cited in ChatGPT

ChatGPT with browsing and its search features retrieves live sources, and it leans heavily on sources that are frequently referenced and well-regarded across the web. That makes off-page reputation disproportionately important here.

  • Get mentioned where ChatGPT looks — reputable publications, active communities, well-maintained directories, and yes, Reddit threads in your niche. Corroboration across many sources makes you a safer pick.
  • Make your brand and entity unambiguous — consistent naming, an Organization schema, a real About page. Models cite entities they can pin down.
  • Publish genuinely useful, specific content with named facts, figures and quotes rather than hedged generalities.

How to show up in Perplexity and other answer engines

Perplexity is the most citation-transparent of the bunch — it shows its sources prominently, which makes it a great place to test your GEO work. It rewards pages that are directly on-topic, cleanly structured, and recently updated, and it pulls from a broad web index rather than a single walled garden. The same discipline applies: clear answer up top, strong structure, real authority, fresh content.

Stop trying to rank in AI search. Start trying to be the source worth quoting — the two look different, and only one of them works.

The shared playbook — what works across every engine

If you do nothing engine-specific, do these six things and you will show up across all of them:

  • Lead with the answer. A self-contained, 40–60 word response near the top of every key section.
  • Structure for extraction. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, real lists.
  • Earn authority (E-E-A-T). Real authors, real credentials, real first-hand experience on the page.
  • Build brand signals off-site. Mentions, references and corroboration beyond your own domain.
  • Use specifics. Statistics, direct quotes and named sources, which measurably lift citation rates.
  • Stay fresh. Maintain and date your important pages; engines prefer current sources.

Most of this doubles as your keyword and content strategy anyway — the overlap with classic SEO is the whole point, and it is why GEO and SEO are not an either/or. It also changes how you pick terms in the first place, which we cover in how AI Overviews change keyword strategy.

How to measure AI-search visibility

There is no clean rank tracker for answers yet, so triangulate. Pick your most important questions and manually check, on a schedule, whether an AI answer appears and whether you are among the cited sources. Watch Search Console for impression patterns on query clusters where Overviews show. Track branded and direct demand — if people are seeing you cited, they search your name. Treat all of it as directional. The honest question is simply: are we getting named more often this quarter than last?

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing for the model and forgetting the human. Keyword-stuffed, robotic content reads as low quality to both.
  • Burying the answer. If the response is on scroll three, it will not be extracted.
  • Ignoring off-page. You cannot on-page your way to being trusted; corroboration lives elsewhere.
  • Chasing one engine. The behaviors overlap — build once, show up everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rank in ChatGPT search results?

You do not rank so much as get cited. Earn mentions across reputable publications, communities and directories that ChatGPT retrieves from, make your brand and entity unambiguous with consistent naming and Organization schema, and publish specific, well-sourced content rather than hedged generalities. Off-page reputation does disproportionate work here.

How do I optimize content for Google AI Overviews?

Win the underlying organic relevance first, since Overviews draw from pages already competing well. Then answer the question in the first two sentences of the relevant section, use question-shaped headings, add FAQ and Article schema, and keep the page fresh and maintained.

Does AI search kill SEO?

No. AI answers sit on top of search indexes, so strong SEO is the price of admission to being cited. What changes is the objective — you now compete for the citation as well as the click. The two disciplines reinforce each other.

How do I know if I’m showing up in AI search?

Manually check your priority questions on a schedule to see whether an AI answer appears and whether you are among the cited sources, watch Search Console impression patterns on those clusters, and track branded and direct demand — being cited tends to drive name searches. Treat it as directional.

Which AI engine should I optimize for first?

Do not pick one. The behaviors overlap so heavily that a page built to be clear, well-structured, authoritative and corroborated tends to show up across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity at once. Build once, appear everywhere.

None of this requires a secret tool. It requires pointing solid content discipline at a new target: being the clearest, best-sourced, most corroborated answer to the questions your customers ask. That is exactly the kind of work we drill with real accounts and real numbers in our AI search sessions — and live on stage at the SEOST Digital Marketing Conference in Chandler, Arizona (April 7–11, 2027).
