The SEOST Link Building Playbook
Link Building & Digital PR.
The practitioner's guide to earning the authority signals that still decide who ranks. No link spam — the plays that build trust that holds.
On competitive terms, content gets you to the door — links and authority decide who gets let in. It's still the signal that breaks the tie.
Most "link building" advice is either outdated spam or vague "create great content." This guide is different. It's the same material we teach on stage at SEO Spring Training — the earned, digital-PR approach that actually moves authority and survives updates.
Start with the fundamentals, learn how to earn links instead of buying them, then layer in outreach and distribution. When you want to go deeper, come learn it in the room with the people doing the work.

How links actually build trust.
Not all links are equal. The ones that move rankings share three traits — get these right and quantity stops mattering.
Relevance
A link from a site in or near your topic carries far more weight than a random one. Relevance tells Google the vote actually means something.
Authority
Links from sites that are themselves trusted pass that trust along. One link from a respected source can outweigh dozens of weak ones.
Earned, not bought
Editorial links — given because your work deserves them — are the ones that compound and survive updates. Bought links are borrowed time.

Questions
Link building, answered.
What is link building?
Link building is the practice of earning links from other websites to yours. Those links act as votes of trust — one of the strongest signals Google and AI models use to decide whose answer to surface on competitive terms.
What's the difference between link building and digital PR?
Link building is the broad discipline of earning links; digital PR is the modern, editorial end of it — creating stories, data and assets worth covering so journalists, creators and relevant sites link to you naturally.
Do backlinks still matter for ranking?
Yes. Links remain one of the signals that break ties on competitive queries and establish real-world authority. What's changed is quality over quantity — a few relevant, trusted links beat hundreds of cheap ones.
How many backlinks do I need?
There's no magic number. What matters is relevance and trust — links from sites in or near your topic, earned editorially. A handful of strong, on-topic links will outperform a large pile of low-quality ones.
What link building tactics should I avoid?
Avoid bought links, private blog networks, mass directory spam and exact-match anchor schemes. They put you one algorithm update from a penalty. Earned, relevant links are slower but they compound and they hold.
